Getting started
Connecting your Plaid developer account
ToFi runs your bank connections under your own free Plaid developer account, so your linked institutions stay under your own usage rather than pooled with other users'. On first launch the app asks for a Plaid Client ID and secret. To get them:
- Create a free account at dashboard.plaid.com/signup
- Find your Client ID and secret under Developers → Keys
- To connect real bank accounts, request Plaid's free Trial plan or Production access
Your environment is fixed once saved, because linked banks are tied to the environment they were connected in. You can rotate your secret later from Settings → Plaid Developer Account.
Linking an account
Go to Settings → Linked Institutions and add an institution. Your bank username and password are entered inside Plaid's own secure screen and go straight to your bank — ToFi never sees them.
Common questions
A transaction is in the wrong category
Tap the transaction and change its category. ToFi remembers the merchant and applies your choice to future transactions from them.
A transfer between my own accounts is showing as spending
ToFi matches transfers between your own accounts and keeps them out of spending totals. If one was missed, open the transaction and mark it as a transfer, then pick its counterpart.
Someone owes me money for a purchase
Mark the transaction as a reimbursement. It stays out of your spending totals until it is settled.
My balances look out of date
ToFi refreshes from your institutions through Plaid. Banks occasionally require you to re-authenticate; if an institution needs attention it is flagged under Settings → Linked Institutions.
How do I disconnect a bank?
Settings → Linked Institutions, then remove the institution. Its accounts and transactions are removed and ToFi's access is revoked.
How do I delete my account?
Settings → Delete Account. The app shows you exactly what will be removed and asks you to confirm. Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone — your account, all your financial data, and your saved Plaid credentials are deleted, and ToFi's access to every institution you linked is revoked. Your own Plaid developer account and your bank accounts are untouched.
